Cozy, renter-friendly homes on a real budget

Editorial Guidelines

Last updated

Linen & Lamp exists to help people in rented and small homes make them cozy and practical without renovating. These guidelines explain how we research, write, check and update what we publish, so you know what to hold us to.

1. The reader's room comes first

Every article starts from a real situation: a measurement, a budget, a lease restriction, a layout problem. If an idea won't work in a rental or a small space, it doesn't belong here, however pretty it looks.

2. How we research

  • Product details come from the manufacturer or retailer listing: dimensions, materials, care instructions, weight limits and return terms. When listings disagree, we go with the manufacturer and mention the discrepancy if it matters.
  • Buyer reviews help us spot recurring problems, like rugs that shed, flimsy hardware or colors that look different in person. We look for patterns across many reviews and set aside one-off extremes.
  • Safety questions (tip-over risks, candles near textiles, electrical products) are checked against official sources such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Renter rules vary by lease, landlord and location. We describe common restrictions and workarounds, never legal advice, and we remind you to check your own lease.

We haven't personally used every product we mention. Recommendations are based on research of public product information, reviews and specs, and an article will say so clearly when we have hands-on experience with something.

3. Writing and review

Drafts may be prepared with help from AI tools, as described in our AI policy. No draft is published as it comes out of a tool. A human editor reviews every article for accuracy, usefulness and tone, rewrites anything vague, removes what we can't support, and approves the final version. The "Reviewed by" line names that person.

4. Our fact-checking list

Before publishing, the editor confirms that:

  • measurements match the source listing, with units shown (inches, plus centimeters where it helps)
  • prices appear as approximate ranges, because they change daily
  • every link goes to the product or page it describes
  • claims like "washable," "no tools needed" or "holds 15 lb" come from the manufacturer and are attributed to them
  • any safety statement is backed by an official or manufacturer source

5. Keeping posts current

Decor products get discontinued and prices move all the time. We review published posts on a rolling basis, starting with our most-read and seasonal articles ahead of each season. When we make a meaningful change, the "Updated" date at the top changes too. Cosmetic edits don't change the date.

6. Corrections

If something we published is wrong, we want to hear about it. Email [email protected] with the article link and what you found.

  • Small fixes (typos, broken links, a mismatched product image) are corrected without a note.
  • Substantive fixes (a wrong measurement, a misstated weight limit, advice that could damage a wall or cost a deposit) are corrected and noted at the end of the article with the date and what changed.
  • Retractions: if an article turns out to be fundamentally wrong or unsafe, we take it down or rewrite it, and explain why.

We aim to review reported errors within five business days.

7. Independence

Linen & Lamp is independently owned. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say in what we cover or how we judge it. We don't accept payment for positive coverage, we don't sell links, and no brand sees an article before it's published. If we ever publish sponsored content, it will be labeled. The full picture of how we earn money is on our disclosure page.

8. Respect and inclusion

Small homes come in every price range, culture and household shape. We write for renters on many budgets, never mock anyone's space, and don't publish photos of real people's homes without their permission.

9. Safety at home

Decorating involves candles, cords, heavy objects and furniture. Follow manufacturer instructions, keep open flames away from fabric and dried greenery, and anchor tall furniture against tip-overs, especially in homes with young children. Hardwired lighting and outlets should be handled by a licensed electrician. Nothing on Linen & Lamp is legal advice about your lease or your rights as a tenant.

10. Reviewing this policy

We review these guidelines at least once a year and whenever our process changes. Last updated October 7, 2026.
