Cozy, renter-friendly homes on a real budget

Privacy Policy

Last updated

Effective: October 7, 2026

Most privacy policies are written for lawyers. We've tried to write this one for the person reading it on a phone while the kettle boils, while still covering everything the law asks of us. By using linenandlamp.com ("Linen & Lamp", "we", "us"), you agree to the practices described here. If you don't agree, please stop using the site.

The short version

  • We collect some information automatically when you visit, plus your email address if you choose to give it to us.
  • Cookies on the site support analytics, advertising, affiliate tracking and a few site features.
  • We don't sell your name or email address to anyone.
  • You can ask to see, fix or delete your information whenever you like.

Kids and this site

Linen & Lamp is a home decor site for adults. It isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you're a parent or guardian and believe your child has given us information, such as an email address for our list, write to [email protected] and we'll delete it.

What we collect

Information you give us

  • Your email address, and your first name if you add it, when you request the free makeover planner or join our list.
  • Whatever you include when you email us: your name, address, and any room details or photos you choose to send.
  • If you buy a digital product, the name, email and billing details you enter at checkout. Card numbers go directly to our payment processor. We never see or store them.

Information collected automatically

  • IP address, browser type and version, device type and operating system
  • Pages you visit, time spent on them, and the site or app that sent you here (often Pinterest)
  • An approximate location based on your IP address, at the city or region level
  • Date and time stamps and standard server log entries kept by our hosting provider

How we use it

  • Running the site, keeping it fast and secure, and fixing what breaks
  • Learning which posts help people, so we can write more of what works and update what doesn't
  • Sending the emails you asked for, starting with the planner download
  • Answering your messages and handling requests
  • Showing ads that pay for the site
  • Getting credit for purchases made through our affiliate links
  • Blocking spam, fraud and abuse
  • Meeting our legal obligations

Cookies, in plain terms

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser so it can remember something later, like the fact that you already closed the email sign-up box. Linen & Lamp and the partners described below use cookies along with similar tools: pixels, tags, local storage and web beacons (tiny bits of code or invisible images that report when a page or email is opened).

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Most of the site keeps working if you do, though some features may forget your preferences. Where the law requires consent, we'll ask for it before non-essential cookies load, and you can change that choice later.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use the site: which articles get read, how far people scroll, and which sources send visitors. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives technical information about your visit. Google states that GA4 does not log or store IP addresses. We look at this data in aggregate, and it doesn't tell us who you are by name. You can read Google's privacy policy or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Advertising

Display ads help keep Linen & Lamp free. We work with, or may work with in the future, third-party ad partners who place ads on our pages. Those partners and their advertisers may use cookies, pixels and similar technologies to collect information about your visits to this and other websites (like IP address, browser, pages viewed and ad interactions) so they can show ads more likely to interest you and measure how ads perform.

We don't choose the individual ads you see, and an ad appearing here isn't a recommendation from us. To opt out of interest-based advertising from many companies at once, visit the Digital Advertising Alliance, the Network Advertising Initiative, or, in Europe, Your Online Choices. You'll still see ads after opting out. They just won't be based on your interests.

Some links on Linen & Lamp are affiliate links, including links to Amazon through the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. When you click one, the retailer may set a cookie showing that we referred you, so we can earn a small commission if you buy. Your price stays the same. The retailer handles your order under its own privacy policy, and we only see reports of which items earned a commission, not who bought them. More on our disclosure page.

Pinterest buttons and other embeds

Many readers find us through Pinterest, so our pages load Pinterest's Save button script. When a page with that script loads, Pinterest may receive information such as your IP address, browser details and the page you're on, and may set cookies, even if you never click the button. If you're logged in to Pinterest, it may link that visit to your account. See Pinterest's privacy policy for how Pinterest uses it.

Other embedded content, like a video or a shopping widget, behaves as if you had visited the site it came from, and that site may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embed.

Our email list

When you sign up for the planner or our newsletter, we use your email address to deliver it, then send occasional emails with new posts, seasonal ideas and, now and then, our own printables. Our emails may track opens and clicks so we can tell which ones are useful. Each one includes an unsubscribe link, and one click takes you off the list for good. We follow the CAN-SPAM Act, which includes listing our postal address in every email. Your address is stored with our email and hosting providers, who process it only on our instructions.

Who else receives information

We share personal information only:

  • with service providers who help run the site (hosting, security, email delivery, analytics, payments), under terms that limit how they may use it
  • with the ad and affiliate partners described above
  • when the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our readers or the public
  • if Linen & Lamp is ever sold or merged, in which case the new owner would take on this policy's commitments for the data it receives

We never rent or trade our email list.

Comments and social media

Linen & Lamp doesn't have a public comment section at the moment. If you tag or mention us on Pinterest, Instagram or another platform, that platform's own policy covers what you post there.

How long we keep it

Subscriber details stay until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Emails you send us are kept as long as we need them to reply and follow up, then cleared out periodically. Analytics data follows our Google Analytics retention setting, which is no longer than 14 months. Server logs are kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting.

Keeping it safe

The site runs over HTTPS, account access is limited to the people who need it, and we choose providers with established security practices. No website or email system is completely secure, so we can't promise absolute security.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and unsubscribe from email at any time.

If you're in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, data protection law (including the GDPR and UK GDPR) gives you the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you
  • have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected
  • have your data erased
  • restrict how we process it
  • object to processing, including for direct marketing
  • receive your data in a portable format
  • withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that already happened
  • lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

We rely on your consent for the email list and non-essential cookies, on our legitimate interest in running and securing a free website, and on contract when you buy a product. We respond within one month.

If you live in California, the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA, gives you the right to:

  • know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, and whether it is sold or shared
  • delete personal information we collected from you
  • correct inaccurate personal information
  • opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information
  • use these rights without being treated differently

We don't sell personal information for money. Ad and analytics cookies from partners may still count as a "sale" or as "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. To opt out, use the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in the site footer when it is shown, or email us with that phrase as the subject. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we'll treat it as an opt-out for that browser wherever our tools can detect it. We respond to verified requests within 45 days.

People in other U.S. states with privacy laws, such as Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut and Texas, can make similar requests the same way.

We link to stores, brands and other blogs. Their privacy practices are their own, and this policy doesn't cover them.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our tools or the law change, and the effective date at the top will change with it. Using the site after an update means you accept the revised policy, so it's worth a look now and then.
